Why Do I Hear a Grinding Noise Near My Wheels?

A grinding noise near one of your wheels can come from several different problems. Common causes include worn brake pads, a damaged brake rotor, a failing wheel bearing, a bent brake dust shield, or debris caught between moving components.

The sound may change when you brake, turn, or increase your speed, which can help identify where it is coming from. Because wheel and brake problems can affect your ability to control or stop the vehicle, persistent grinding should be inspected as soon as possible. Why Does My Car Make a Grinding Noise When I Brake?

Grinding while braking often means the brake pads have worn down far enough that metal is contacting the brake rotors. Continuing to drive can damage the rotors and calipers, increase the cost of the repair, and reduce braking performance.

Light grinding during the first few stops after the vehicle has been parked—especially after rain, snow, or a damp night—may be caused by temporary surface rust. Why Does My Car Squeal When It Starts?

A squealing noise when the engine first starts is commonly caused by a slipping serpentine belt. The belt may be worn, loose, glazed, contaminated by oil or coolant, or affected by a weak belt tensioner. A worn pulley or accessory bearing can produce a similar sound.

The squeal may only last a few seconds or become louder when you turn on the air conditioning, use the power steering, or accelerate. Even if the noise disappears after the engine warms up, the belt and pulleys should be inspected. A failed serpentine belt can disable important systems such as the alternator, water pump, or power steering.

Why Does My Car Squeal in Cold Weather?

Cold weather can make existing belt and brake problems more noticeable. Rubber belts become stiffer in low temperatures and may briefly slip during startup. Moisture or light surface rust can also form on the brake rotors overnight, causing the brakes to squeak during the first few stops. Cold weather also places additional strain on the battery and starting system.

Why Won’t My Car Start?

Why Does My Car Chug or Shake When It Starts?

Why Does Nothing Happen When I Turn the Key or Press Start?

When there is no crank, no clicking, and little or no response from the vehicle, the problem is often electrical. Possible causes include a dead battery, loose or corroded battery terminals, a failed starter or starter relay, a faulty ignition switch, or a problem with the park/neutral safety switch. Push-button vehicles may also fail to respond when the key-fob battery is dead or the vehicle does not recognize the key.

Make sure the transmission is fully in Park and try starting the vehicle in Neutral. Push the brake or clutch pedal firmly and check the dashboard for a “key not detected” message. If the lights are dim or completely off, the battery or its connections are a likely starting point. If the lights work normally but the engine does nothing, the starter circuit should be professionally tested.
